Robert J. Homel of New Lenox, IL, passed away peacefully at the age of 71 surrounded by his loved ones. Robert was born on April 23, 1949, in Chicago, IL, to Casey Homel and Anna nee Ryba. Robert married his high-school sweetheart Mary Labriola on August 8, 1970, and they recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Robert and Mary raised three children: Bryan, Melissa, and Jennifer. Robert faithfully served his country in the United States Army as a medic in Vietnam, and was a member of his local VFW post. Bob owned his own sandwich shop, The Space Shuttle, worked for American Airlines for 20 years, and retired as a Cook County Sherriff’s Deputy. Robert loved to golf, travel, and enjoyed playing the concertina, trumpet, and bass guitar. Bob was always up for a card game, playing bean bags, bowling or anything else that would include a cold beer and good conversation. He also enjoyed caring for his lawn meticulously! He was a jack of all trades, always lending a hand to help others. Most of all, Bob loved his family and would do anything for them.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Casey. He is survived by his wife Mary, son Bryan (Amy), daughters Melissa Dehaan and Jennifer (Bob) Mehorczyk, his brother Jim, and his beloved grandchildren Savannah, Gianna, Dylan, Kaycee, Caleb, Titus, and Lukas.
Visitation Sunday from 3:00 to 8:00 PM at the Vandenberg Funeral Home 17248 S. Harlem Ave. Tinley Park, IL. Interment private.
