John Sasveld Jr., age 92, late of Tinley Park, IL, passed away March 9, 2024, at Northwestern Medicine Palos Hospital surrounded by his family. John served in the U.S. Army 31st Infantry Regiment in the Korean War and was awarded, among others, the Combat Infantry Badge, Korean Service Medal and two Korean Presidential Unit Citation awards for participation in the Inchon Landing and the Battle of Chosin. A lifetime member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 150, he had a long career as a heavy equipment operator with Alsterda Construction Company. He was a long-time parishioner of St. Stephen Deacon and Martyr Catholic Church in Tinley Park, IL. John spent his 28 years of retirement enjoying music, travel, golf, reading, bowling, and puzzles. Most of all he loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Beloved husband of Patricia Sasveld (nee Gerdes). Loving father of Dan (Michelle) and Karen (Jeff) DeToro. Cherished grandfather of Madeleine, Connor, and Natalie. Caring brother of Allan (Marjorie) Sasveld and the late Clyde (late Mary) Sasveld. Dear son of the late John Sr. and the late Clara (nee Smith) Sasveld. Kind uncle to many nieces and nephews.
Memorial Visitation, Friday, March 15, 2024, 3:00-8:00 PM at Vandenberg Funeral Home, 17248 Harlem Avenue, Tinley Park, IL. 60447. Military Honors will be rendered at 5:00 PM in the Funeral Home Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will commence Saturday, March 16, 2024, 10:00 AM at St. Stephen Deacon & Martyr Church. Inurnment in Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery at a future date.
