John A. Jurus

John A. Jurus, age 93, passed away Wednesday, July 26, 2023, at his home in Oak Forest, Illinois. John was a father, grandfather, great grandfather, Uncle Al, and friend to many. He was the middle child of seven children born to Stephen J. Jurus and Lucille Shearin Jurus on November 30, 1929. He often told stories of growing up in Chicago; selling papers as a teenager, hanging out at the beach, and of the mischief he and his brothers would get into. He excelled at gymnastics and could do a headstand well into his seventies. His first career goal was to become a teacher, a profession he was extremely proud of. Many of his former students kept in touch with him throughout his lifetime. At the same time as he was teaching, he built his own home and also pursued his goal of becoming an attorney, attending law school in the evenings. He passed the bar in 1962 and began a successful law practice in Oak Forest, Illinois that lasted over sixty years, making John one of the older practicing attorneys in the state. He was well respected by both clients and fellow attorneys.

He is survived by his son Alan Jurus (Corinne) of Las Cruces, New Mexico and his daughter Cathy Jurus Langer (Richard) of Ashland, Oregon; grandchildren Cadie Amber, Joshua, Cara, and Bryan; great grandchildren Luna, Mila, Rosemary, Oliver, Destiny, Kyliee, Joshlynn, Vicente, Ruthlynn, and Rylynn; his companion of 40 years, Gaye Carter; her children Tammie, Steven, and Michael, and grandchildren Julia, Ryan, and Kimberly; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded by his parents, brothers Emmett, Thomas, Donald, William, and Bernard, and his sister Bernice Jurus Benson. Family and friends were the cornerstone of his life. Those who had the good fortune to know John/Al knew he was a loyal friend and confidant and genuinely cared about you. He will be greatly missed.
