James O'Leary

Beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather, Veteran, and Friend

James O'Leary, age 81, of Palos Heights, Illinois, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, laughter, and love. A proud U.S. Army veteran and retired military police officer, Jim lived a life of quiet service, earning the Good Conduct Medal during his military tenure and the respect of all who had the privilege to know him.

Born to Jerome and Evelyn (née Mauer) O'Leary, Jim was raised in a family that valued loyalty and hard work-qualities he carried with him throughout his life. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Linda O'Leary, whom he met while working at ComEd. She was the love of his life and his perfect partner, completing the family they built with so much joy and pride.

Jim was a proud graduate of Leo High School, where his sense of pride and community spirit first began to take root. He was a lifelong White Sox fan and often reminded people-sometimes jokingly, sometimes not-that he was not a Bears fan, instead holding a lifelong fondness for the Cardinals football team, even after their move from Chicago.

He was a devoted father to Michael (Julie née Bleski) O'Leary, Mary O'Leary Dronson, and James O'Leary, and a doting grandfather to Michael (Mickey), Molly, Colin, and Jack O'Leary. Whether cheering from the stands or bragging to friends, Jim never missed a chance to support his grandkids at their games. His presence on the sidelines, always proud and always loud, will be dearly missed.

He is also survived by his cherished niece and nephew, Sheila O'Leary and Thomas (Erin) O'Leary, along with a host of extended family and friends who will miss his steady presence, dry wit, and generous heart.

Jim was preceded in death by his siblings Jack (Marilyn née Ouradnik) and Donald O'Leary, with whom he shared deep bonds and countless stories over the years.

A memorial visitation will be held on Saturday, May 24, 2025, at Vandenberg Funeral Home, from 10:00 AM until a noon service, followed by military honors to honor his service to his country.

In Jim's memory, we celebrate a life well lived-with humor, humility, and the kind of love that shows up every day. He will be missed more than words can say, but remembered every time a Sox game is on, a grandchild has a life event, or someone takes a moment to do the right thing just because it's the right thing to do.
