Gary Robert Nelson, age 75, of Mokena IL, passed away peacefully on March 10, 2025. Gary was born in Chicago on July 24, 1949 to Bertil and Lois Nelson. Gary is remembered as a devoted family man, a dedicated veteran, and an active community leader.
Gary and his beloved wife, Sharon (née Moy), were high school sweethearts who wed just two weeks before his departure for military service in Vietnam. Gary safely returned to the United States, ready to build a life with his new wife. The couple settled in Mokena, Illinois, where they raised four children-Robert, Karen, Cheryl, and Gail-and shared countless memories.
Gary had a successful career in computer programming, working at companies like Wm. Wrigley, Jr. and Great Dane Trailers, retiring in 2013. He was deeply involved in his community, particularly with the Burros football program, where he served as program director, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars at Mokena Lodge, where he was once commander.
Gary loved the outdoors and took countless fishing and camping trips with his friends and family. Also a skilled handyman, he was always ready to help with new projects. Gary also cherished time spent at his second home in Michigan's Upper Peninsula-a place where he found solace and joy.
Gary's legacy lives on in his surviving family: his children-Robert Nelson; Karen, along with her husband William Novak; Cheryl, with her husband Neil Vanderlee; and Gail, alongside her husband Wyatt Marshall-and his beloved grandchildren Hunter, Dawson, Dakota, Skylar, Lukas, Jonathan, Maisey, and Madeleine. He was preceded in death by his dear wife Sharon in 2009 and cherished Lana Sutton, who passed in 2023.
He will be remembered for his generosity, steadfast loyalty, and the profound impact he had on everyone who knew him. His life was a testament to dedication, service, and the strength of family bonds.
