Deborah Ann Mildred Schmitt, lovingly known as Debbie, was born to Victor and Mildred Korosic in Chicago, Illinois, and raised in Oak Lawn. She peacefully passed away on February 22, 2025. As the eldest sister to Victor and Mark, Debbie's nurturing spirit and vibrant personality were felt by all who knew her. During her teenage years, Debbie shared a beautiful four-year romance with Michael Scanlan, only to be separated by life's journey for 43 years before fate lovingly reunited them in 2016. Their rekindled love became the cornerstone of her joy and peace in her later years.
Debbie spent 35 years married to David Schmitt, sharing countless memories and happy times at their cherished Wisconsin country farm. It was there that Debbie found solace and happiness, surrounded by nature and the animals she loved so dearly. Debbie's heart was vast, encompassing not only her beloved family but also countless furry companions. A devoted animal lover, she parented many cherished cats and dogs throughout her life. Her farm was her sanctuary, a place where she could fully embrace her love for animals and the peace of the countryside. A spirited soul, Debbie found joy in bowling, bingo, and playing all kinds of card games. She was a gifted cook who loved to host family holidays, a tradition she shared with her siblings, filling each gathering with warmth and laughter. Her trays of homemade cookies were legendary, made with love for each family member but especially for her cherished "original eight" nieces and nephews.
Debbie leaves behind her soulmate, Michael Scanlan, and her loving siblings, Victor (Sandra) Korosic and Mark (Beth) Korosic, Her brother-in-law John (Marcie) Schmitt. Her legacy of love and generosity lives on through her nieces and nephews: Elysa (Paul) Siano, Autum (Nicholas) Setta, Steve (Elly) Korosic, Scott (Britt) Korosic, Andrew (Natalie) Korosic, Steven (Katie) Schmitt, Daniel (Nicki) Schmitt, and Kevin (Gwen) Schmitt, as well as 14 great-nieces and nephews who adored their Aunt Debbie. She will also be remembered fondly by her original mother-in-law, Albina Schmitt, numerous other family members, and a circle of friends who will forever miss her gentle spirit and kind heart. Her loyal pets who brought her so much joy await her in peace.
As we say goodbye to Debbie, we find comfort in knowing she is reunited with her parents, Victor and Mildred, her husband of 35 years David Schmitt, and her many beloved pets and friends who have gone before her. Her love, laughter, and generosity will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her. May her soul rest in gentle peace.
