August C. Hurt

June 12, 1930 — December 19, 2013

Born in Chicago, Illinois to parents Rose & August Hurt. Gus grew up in the suburban Berwyn area. After high school he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served 4 years. In 1952, his last station was Bergstrom AFB in Austin, Texas where he met, then married Joyce – his life long love of 60 years.
Gus and Joyce began their life together in Tinley Park, Illinois with their 4 children: Janet O’Bryan (John) of Naperville; Nancy Glass (Doug) of Omaha, Nebraska; David (Karina) of Myakka City, Florida; and Jeff in Westmont. Gus worked for Illinois Bell, now Lucent, as Manager and Superintendent of installation.
In 1961, Gus joined the Knights of Columbus in Tinley Park. As a member he enjoyed many credits working his way up to head Illinois as State Deputy. After that top position he became Vice Supreme Master, covering 3 states. Another highlight in 1970, he helped create and co-chair the K. of C. Mentally Retarded program, better known as the “Tootsie Roll Drive”, originating from Fr. C.C. Boyle in Tinley Park. This program is now accepted in most states.
After retirement from Lucent, Gus and Joyce moved to Harlingen, Texas where he enjoyed golf at the Harlingen Country Club, was a member of Life Begins at Forty, served many committees and was a trustee for 12 years in the town of Palm Valley.
Because of his bout with dementia, Gus and Joyce’s last move was to Omaha, Nebraska in October 2013. Gus was so proud of his loving and wonderful family. Preceding him in death besides his parents are 2 grandchildren, Brian and Lindsay Glass. Survivors include wife, Joyce and 4 children and spouses, grandchildren: Justin, Adam, Drew O’Bryan; Brandon, Ben, Nick, Alex, Jenna Glass; Aliyah and Julian Hurt. Also, brother Howard Hurt (Susan), sister Lynn Kosmak (George), many nieces, nephews, cousins and good friends. Memorials may be made to: Fr. C.C. Boyle K. of C., 6707 W. 175th St., Tinley Park, IL 60477 (Memo to “Tootsie Roll Drive” for Gus Hurt Memorial).
